Wildlife Update: June 2, 2023

Young animals are starting to become a common sight on the Glacial Lake Grantsburg properties right now. Bear cubs, fox kits, fawns, and goslings have all been spotted recently. Swan cygnets are likely not far behind. Please keep in mind that the best thing to do when encountering young animals is to give them their space. Help us keep wildlife wild!

Wildlife Update: May 23, 2023

If you are planning a trip to Crex Meadows, now is a great time to come! We have 173 different species on our recent bird sightings list, all sighted within the past week (within Crex Meadows, Fish Lake, Amsterdam Sloughs, and the surrounding area). We have also been having lovely spring weather here in the Grantsburg area. There have been many days with temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s, and only some in the 60’s. Road conditions are great in the wildlife areas. All roads that were a mess this spring have been repaired.

Wildlife Update: May 16, 2023

If you are planning a trip to Crex Meadows, now is the time to come! We are at the peak of our bird migration season, with our longest sightings list yet at 164 different species (all sighted within the past week). We have also been having lovely spring weather here in the Grantsburg area. There have been many days with temperatures in the 70’s, and only some in the 60’s. Road conditions are improving every day on the wildlife areas. The township staff have been grading roads, and we have had many dry days to help out.

We have also had several of our warblers and sparrows returning to the area within the past week. A few highlights include Clay-colored Sparrow, Fox Sparrow, Lark Sparrow, Lincoln’s Sparrow, Orange-crowned Warbler, Palm Warbler, Savannah Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, and White-throated Sparrow.

Spring is here, but cooler temperatures are still in the air. Visitors should expect a cool and wet weekend with forecasted rain showers. Despite the cooler temperatures, birds continue to return to the area. More and more insects are appearing, and trees have begun to bud.

Within the past few days, we have been seeing several different species showing up in the area, including American White Pelican, Broad-winged Hawk, Canvasback, Common Goldeneye, Common Loon, Gadwall, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Herring Gull, Horned Grebe, Palm Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and Ruddy Duck.
