Weather has been hot the past few days in the Grantsburg area, with many days in the high 80’s and a couple days reaching the 90’s. With a couple of days having a strong south wind last week, many of our migrating birds have been pushed out of the area, including most of the warblers.
We are still seeing some interesting shorebirds hanging out on Grettum Flowage, which is still completely drained of water (fully “drawn down”). Some of the uncommon species for this area include American Golden-plover, Baird’s Sandpiper, Black-bellied Plover, Long-billed Dowitcher, Ruddy Turnstone, Sanderling, Short-billed Dowitcher, Stilt Sandpiper, Willet, and Wilson’s Phalarope.
We are also seeing baby animals popping up around the properties, including goslings, the first Sandhill Crane colts, black bear cubs, red fox kits, and more. Because we are in the beginning of “baby animals season”, the WDNR would like to remind visitors to Keep Wildlife Wild whenever possible. It’s important to observe wildlife at a respectful distance and always remember that a young animal’s best chance for survival is with its parents (there are a few exceptions for wildlife young who do not stay with their mother; this includes things like turtles, who are completely independent upon hatching).
Most roads in Crex Meadows, Fish Lake and Amsterdam Sloughs have been holding up quite well but can be wet and muddy after significant rainfall. It is a good idea to check in with Visitor Center staff before making a trip to the area to learn the most current information.
