Wildlife Update: May 19, 2026

Weather has been variable this past week, with some days into the upper 80’s, and some down into the 50’s. We did end up having a couple of days of rain within the past week as well (which was much needed!). The extended forecast looks like warmer weather may be on the way! Migration is in full swing in the Grantsburg area, with new species being spotted daily. Our bird list for the past week has reached 172 species!

Some waterfowl species are still hanging around the area, but most migrants have gone north, and our residents will be starting to nest at this time. Songbirds are moving through the area, with numerous warbler species sighted over the past few days.

Grettum Flowage is currently drawn down to mudflats, making it perfect for shorebird viewing, and some of our dabbling ducks are hanging around there as well.

We are also seeing baby animals popping up around the properties, including goslings, the first Sandhill Crane colts, black bear cubs, red fox kits, and more. Because we are in the beginning of “baby animals season”, the WDNR would like to remind visitors to Keep Wildlife Wild whenever possible. It’s important to observe wildlife at a respectful distance and always remember that a young animal’s best chance for survival is with its parents (there are a few exceptions for wildlife young who do not stay with their mother; this includes things like turtles, who are completely independent upon hatching).

Most roads in Crex Meadows, Fish Lake and Amsterdam Sloughs have been holding up quite well but can be wet and muddy after significant rainfall. It is a good idea to check in with Visitor Center staff before making a trip to the area to learn the most current information.
