Wildlife Update: July 19, 2024

Weekdays: 8:00 am- 4:30 pm; Weekends: 10:00 am-4:00 pm.

The weather has been hot in the Grantsburg area the past few weeks. We have had most days in the high 70’s, and in the 80’s, but have also had a couple of days in the high 80’s. The humidity levels were extremely high for a couple of weeks, but had dropped down this past week. We are expecting more hot and humid weather in the next 10 days.

We seeing so many of our beautiful wildflowers blooming, and there is a lot more still to come within the next few weeks! Some great places to check for a variety of wildflowers are: Abel Road, Main Dike Road (the eastern section), and James Road.

We are still in the midst of “baby animals season”, which is always an exciting time of the year! We have seen many swan and goose families on our flowages, along with many duck broods, Sandhill Crane colts, Common loon chicks, fawns, and black bear cubs. Keep your eyes peeled, as these can sometimes be difficult to see!

**This time of the year, the Wisconsin DNR would like to remind the public to help keep wildlife wild. Always remember that a baby animals best chance for survival is with its mother. To learn how to tell if a baby animal is truly orphaned, please visit the WI DNR website at dnr.wisconsin.gov, and search “Keep Wildlife Wild”.
