SUMMARY:Crex Nature Book Club- The Gift of Deer by Helen Hoover
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually or in person the 4th Wednesday of each month for a nature-themed book club! (Dates that conflict with holidays or are close to holidays will be changed). \n**Novembers’s book club date has been moved to the 3rd Wednesday to avoid the week of Thanksgiving.** \nTicket sales close 6 weeks before the meeting. You only need to purchase a ticket if you need a copy of the book supplied for you. The $15 ticket fee covers the cost of the book. If you want to obtain the book on your own\, please choose the free RSVP instead of purchasing a ticket. \nZoom links will be sent directly to your email when you RSVP/purchase a ticket. A link to the book club meeting will also be available on this page when the book club meeting begins. \nAbout the book… \n“In the farthest wilds of northeastern Minnesota\, back in the Gunflint Range\, the author of this book and her artist-husband have a two-room cabin home in the bush country. Beginning one Christmas Day when they first watched the starving deer they later named Peter\, the Hoovers had many opportunities\, a passionate inclination\, and the nature skills to observe this whitetail buck—joined later by his mate\, and finally by several of their offspring—through the changing seasons of four years. Close as their relationship was to the generations of beautiful animals\, the Hoovers did not consider them pets but fellow inhabitants of that wild country. Their observations reveal the rewards of living close to wild creatures; but more than that\, they add valuable information to our knowledge of the cycle of life of the deer and other creatures native to the same world. For although the deer are the chief characters of this book\, they are by no means the only wild creatures Mrs. Hoover writes of. Her naturalist’s eye is just as sharp and her affection just as great for the antics of a curious chickadee or a flying squirrel. Mrs. Hoover’s identification with nature knows no favoritism. \nThe Hoovers’ world—the bush country of the United States-Canadian border—is farther removed from civilization than “Mr. Emerson’s woodlot\,” but the close relationship of The Gift of the Deer to Walden is evident for all to enjoy. \nAdrian Hoover’s drawings are from life\, and they add another level of understanding to his wife’s vivid prose.” \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:The annual meeting is scheduled for the fourth Sunday in September each year from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The social before the meeting is held in the Crex Meadows Meeting & Gathering Hall. \nGather and chat at 1:00 p.m. to enjoy refreshments. At 1:45 p.m. we will move to the Visitor Center for the meeting. Expect to hear a recap of the last year\, vote for new board members\, and watch volunteer awards be announced. Plus\, we will select two lucky members in attendance to receive free Crex Meadows merchandise! \nBallots to vote for new board members will be available at the meeting. If you would like to vote but cannot attend the meeting\, they will be available online closer to the meeting date and will be emailed to members we have email addresses for. If you would like to request a mail-in ballot\, please call the Friends of Crex Coordinator\, Dicey\, at 715-463-1220. \nAll members are invited and encouraged to attend the meeting! \nAnnual meeting dates\, times\, and details are subject to change. \n
